Harold “Red” Grange was the first superstar in pro football history.
So although Grange was suiting up for the Bears, his paycheck came from Pyle. And while the Bears were a member of the NFL, this was an extracurricular tour where Chicago took on nonleague teams and league clubs across the country.
It is difficult to overestimate the magic of Grange’s name at that time. It was party time all over the United States in the days before the Great Depression. Grange had established himself, and Americans who had never attended a football game were attracted by the opportunity to see a player they had heard about and felt might be the best player in the world.
